- Usar condicionais mistas (mixed conditionals)
- Usar "wish" e "if only" para lamentar
Explicação
Estrutura: If + past perfect, would have + particípio passado
If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam. (mas eu não estudei, e não passei) She wouldn't have missed the flight if she had left earlier.
Tipo A, condição no passado, resultado no presente: Estrutura: If + past perfect, would + verbo (sem "have")
If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now. → Se eu tivesse estudado medicina, eu seria médico agora. (condição no passado → resultado no presente)
Tipo B, condição geral/presente, resultado no passado: Estrutura: If + past simple, would have + particípio
If she weren't so shy, she would have applied for the job.
3. Wish / If only
Usados para expressar desejos e arrependimentos:
| Estrutura | Uso | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
I wish I had more time. → Queria ter mais tempo. |
| wish + past perfect | arrependimento sobre o passado | I wish I had studied harder. → Queria ter estudado mais. |
| wish + would | desejo de mudança no comportamento de alguém | I wish you would stop interrupting me. |
| if only | igual a "wish", mas mais enfático | If only I had known the truth! |
I wish I spoke French fluently. → Eu queria falar francês fluentemente. (mas não falo) I wish I hadn't said that. → Eu queria não ter dito aquilo. (arrependimento, passado)
Vocabulário: Arrependimento e reflexão
regret (arrepender-se), in hindsight (em retrospecto/olhando para trás), looking back (olhando para trás), to make a mistake (cometer um erro), to miss an opportunity (perder uma oportunidade)
Diálogo modelo
A: Looking back, I wish I had traveled more when I was younger. B: Same here. If I had saved more money back then, I would be traveling right now instead of working overtime. A: True. If only we had known how fast time would pass! B: Well, we can't change the past, but if we start saving now, we'll be able to travel next year.
