C2 · Lição 5: Variedades do Inglês e Registro
Objetivos da lição
- Reconhecer diferenças entre inglês britânico, americano e outras variedades
- Ajustar o registro (formal/informal/gíria) conforme o contexto social
1. Britânico x Americano: vocabulário
| British English | American English | Português |
|---|---|---|
| flat | apartment | apartamento |
| lift | elevator | elevador |
| lorry | truck | caminhão |
| holiday | vacation | férias |
| biscuit | cookie | biscoito |
| trousers | pants | calças |
| rubbish | garbage/trash | lixo |
| queue | line | fila |
| chemist | pharmacy/drugstore | farmácia |
| autumn | fall | outono |
| petrol | gas/gasoline | gasolina |
| mobile phone | cell phone | celular |
2. Britânico x Americano: ortografia
| British | American |
|---|---|
| colour, favour | color, favor |
| realise, organise | realize, organize |
| centre, theatre | center, theater |
| travelling, cancelled | traveling, canceled |
| defence, licence (subst.) | defense, license |
| analyse | analyze |
3. Britânico x Americano: gramática
British: Have you got a pen? / American: Do you have a pen? British: I shall call you later. / American: I will call you later. ("shall" é raro nos EUA) British: The team are playing well. (concordância com substantivos coletivos no plural) American: The team is playing well. (concordância no singular) British: I've just eaten. / American: I just ate. (americano usa mais passado simples onde britânico prefere present perfect)
4. Outras variedades importantes
| Variedade | Traço característico |
|---|---|
| Irish English | estruturas como "I'm after eating" (= eu acabei de comer) |
5. Registro (Register): do formal à gíria
| Registro | Exemplo | Contexto |
|---|---|---|
| Muito formal | "I would be most grateful if you could..." | carta oficial, diplomacia |
| Formal | "Could you please send the report?" | e-mail profissional |
| Neutro | "Can you send the report?" | conversa cotidiana educada |
| Informal | "Can you shoot me the report?" | colegas próximos |
| Gíria | "Send it over, mate." / "Yo, send that over." | amigos, contexto casual |
Um falante C2 sabe que usar "shoot me the report" com um cliente formal é inadequado, e que usar "I would be most grateful" com um amigo soa artificial/engraçado. Adequação de registro é tão importante quanto correção gramatical.
Vocabulário: Termos sociolinguísticos
dialect (dialeto), accent (sotaque), code-switching (alternância de código/registro), slang (gíria), colloquialism (expressão coloquial), register (registro)
Prática: Mesma mensagem, registros diferentes
Muito formal: "I am writing to inform you that the meeting has been rescheduled." Neutro: "Just a heads-up that the meeting's been moved." Gíria/informal: "Yo, meeting got moved, heads up."
