If necessary, we'll postpone the meeting. (= If it is necessary...) Once completed, the report will be sent to the board. (= Once it is completed...) She's more experienced than I ~~am~~. (elisão do verbo repetido) He wanted to help, but couldn't. (= couldn't help) Whatever the outcome, we'll respect the decision. (= Whatever the outcome may be)
Estruturas como "if necessary", "if possible", "once done", "when in doubt", "unless otherwise stated" são extremamente comuns em inglês formal escrito (contratos, manuais, e-mails corporativos) e soam mais naturais que suas versões completas.
Weather permitting, the event will take place outdoors. The meeting having ended, everyone left the building. → Tendo a reunião terminado, todos deixaram o prédio. All things considered, this was a successful year. → Considerando tudo, foi um ano bem-sucedido. His hands shaking, he opened the envelope.
Having finished the report, she went home. (= After she had finished...) Not knowing what to say, he remained silent. (= Because he didn't know...) Seen from above, the city looks like a grid. (= When it is seen from above...) Given the circumstances, I think we made the right call. (= Considering the circumstances...)
Had it not been for her help, we would have failed. (mais elegante que "If it had not been for...")
Vocabulário: Conectores de registro elevado
thereby (por meio disso), whereupon (ao que), notwithstanding (não obstante), insofar as (na medida em que), by the same token (pela mesma lógica), that said (dito isso), all things being equal (sendo tudo igual)
Prática: Trecho de estilo elevado
Weather permitting, the ceremony will be held in the garden. All things considered, this has been a remarkable year for the company, profits having risen by 20%, and, market conditions notwithstanding, growth is expected to continue. Given these results, the board has decided, whatever the risks, to expand into new markets.
Exercícios
1) Reescreva usando elipse:
a) If it is possible, please arrive early. → b) He is taller than I am. →
2) Complete com a oração absoluta adequada:
a) , the trip was cancelled. (weather / permitting → forma negativa lógica: "não permitindo") b) , we decided to proceed with the plan. (all things / considered)
3) Reduza a oração para uma estrutura participial:
a) Because she didn't know the answer, she stayed quiet. → b) After he had finished his work, he left. →
4) Traduza usando registro elevado:
→ b) Considerando as circunstâncias, fizemos o certo. →
Gabarito
1) a) If possible, please arrive early., b) He is taller than I.
2) a) Weather not permitting, b) All things considered
3) a) Not knowing the answer, she stayed quiet., b) Having finished his work, he left.
4) a) Had it not been for you, I wouldn't have succeeded., b) Given the circumstances, we did the right thing.
