"Government of the people, by the people, for the people." (Lincoln) We must learn from the past, live in the present, and plan for the future.

2. Tricolon

"Veni, vidi, vici" → "I came, I saw, I conquered." "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world, transform lives, and build the future."

"Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country." (Kennedy) "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." (Armstrong) "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." (Dickens)

4. Anáfora (Anaphora)

Repetir a mesma palavra/frase no início de orações sucessivas, para criar acúmulo emocional:

"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields..." (Churchill) "I have a dream that... I have a dream that..." (MLK Jr.)

5. Quiasmo (Chiasmus)

"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." (também é antítese + quiasmo) "Fair is foul, and foul is fair." (Shakespeare, Macbeth)

Understatement: "It's just a scratch" (sobre um ferimento grave, ironia deliberada) Hyperbole: "I've told you a million times." / "This bag weighs a ton."

"Do we want to live in a world where injustice goes unpunished? I don't think so." "Isn't it time we did something about this?"

Vocabulário: Termos de análise retórica

rhetoric (retórica), persuasive (persuasivo), emphasis (ênfase), rhythm (ritmo), cadence (cadência), figure of speech (figura de linguagem), delivery (entrega/performance de um discurso)

Prática: Analisando um trecho

"We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air..." (Churchill)

Análise: anáfora ("we shall...") repetida para criar acúmulo de determinação; tricolon nos elementos finais ("seas and oceans... air"); ritmo quase poético por meio da repetição estrutural.

Exercícios

1) Identifique a figura de retórica:

a) "Fair is foul, and foul is fair." → b) "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears." (tricolon de vocativos) → c) "I have a dream... I have a dream..." →

(mantenha a antítese) →

Gabarito

1) a) Quiasmo (e antítese); b) Tricolon; c) Anáfora

4) "Ask not what your country can do for you" (frase original de Kennedy, mantendo estrutura invertida/antítese).
